The humble doormat is often overlooked or thought of as a nice-to-have, but it is actually an incredibly hardworking barrier to your home.
Doormats trap dirt, moisture and germs tracked into the house on the bottom of shoes, keeping the bulk of it out of your home and trapped in the coarse fibre. They are also the perfect punctuation to your entrance, providing a spot to pause, wipe your feet and take in the welcoming environment.
Most homes only have one doormat, but actually two is the ideal number – one on the outside of the home and one on the inside of the doorway. This double-up trick serves two purposes; the outside mat grabbing hold of dirt and sand and the inside one soaking up moisture. Another great idea is to lay your doormat in portrait form instead of landscape. This means there is more material to walk over, giving the material more opportunity to catch stubborn particles.
You’ll want to choose a doormat that has coarse fibre but is easy to clean. Doormats need to be beaten regularly and hosed off if they become very dirty. Choose designs made from natural woven fibres that are tough on dirt but easy on the feet. Geometric patterns have the added benefit of ridges that get deep into the tread of shoes.
