Egyptian cotton

Caroline striped Egyptian cotton sheetsThere are a number of reasons why Egyptian cotton is thought to be the finest there is.

Egyptian cotton has extra long fibres, which means it can be spun into very fine yarns that are supple and long-lasting. It’s also highly absorbent, so it absorbs dyes better than many other types of cotton, giving richer, longer lasting colour. It also makes wonderfully absorbent bathrobes and bath towels that leave you feeling really dry.

On top of all that, Egyptian cotton improves with age, so the more you wash it the softer and more luxurious it gets.

Watch out for the pretenders

True Egyptian cotton comes only from Egypt, but with all these benefits it’s no wonder some cottons claim to be Egyptian when they’re not.

When you’re buying an Egyptian cotton product look for:

  • The percentage of Egyptian cotton used. Look for 100% Egyptian cotton.
  • The thread count. This is simply how many threads of cotton are woven lengthwise and widthwise into an inch of fabric. The higher the thread count, the denser the weave and the higher the quality of the fabric. Simple really.
